The Cote D’Azur was abuzz this past week as Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) kicked off MIPTV 2012, the bi-annual international television and media market, with the arrival of Jersey Shore cast members Deena Nicole Cortese and Vinny Guadagnino – plus the hotly speculated news that the first ever off-channel format of the hit MTV series would soon be arriving on French shores through a deal with the TF1 Group, France’s leading national broadcaster.
Vinny and Deena were in Cannes – feeling right at home in the famous beachside town – along with Chris Linn (MTV’s EVP of Programming & Production) and Caroline Beaton (VIMN’s SVP of Intl Programme Sales) to appear for MIPTV’s keynote showcase “Jersey Shore: How MTV is Cracking the Millennial Code” moderated by TBI Magazine’s Deputy Editor Peter White, to take an insider look at MTV’s most popular series of all time.
Airing across MTV’s 60 plus channels in more than 150 territories, Jersey Shore is one of MTV’s best performing global series. What’s the secret of this success? Authenticity and the show’s unique ability to tap into audience sensibilities, Linn explained during the panel. Beaton added the global appeal also lies in the quality of the production and of course the cast, whose charm and personalities have won them fans from Seaside to Singapore.
Vinny summed up it up best (also providing the MIPTV Tweet of the Day) “Someone sitting up in the hills of Mongolia is watching me fist pump” – capturing the global reach and cultural scale of the Jersey Shore phenomenon.
VIMN programming and BeViacom execs were also on hand at MIPTV 2012 to platform the company’s renowned kids’ portfolio and branded entertainment opportunities.
Jules Borkent (SVP, Global Acquisitions and Intl Programming at Nick) joined The Global Animation Marketplace, emphasising the importance of animation to Nickelodeon’s content mix – from ‘modern day hero’ SpongeBob SquarePants to Nick’s highly anticipated mutation in progress, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Live Action – Must-See TV for Kids! featured Nina Hahn (SVP, Intl Production at Nickelodeon) discussing Nickelodeon’s proven track record in creating hit live actions shows including Big Time Rush, iCarly and Victorious and continued leadership with a slate of original live action series premiering this year such as How to Rock.
Dave Sibley (EVP & MD BeViacom) participated in the ‘Branded Entertainment Showcase’ – to present BeViacom’s CKOne (Calvin Klein) campaign, highlighting the group’s ability to deliver multi-brand, multiplatform propositions by leveraging VIMN’s extensive global reach.
