Gothenburg was in for a treat on the eve of midsummer, the longest day of the year, as MTV World Stage transformed one of Gothenburg’s squares, Götaplatsen, into a pulsating concert venue.
Symbolizing the summer solstice, the stage was dressed completely in a beautiful white and delicate material – fabric typically used as military camouflage to cover up objects in the snow. But there was no camouflaging the fact that 50,000 people poured onto the square in the late afternoon to get the best spots in front of the stage to watch performances from Swedish and international talent including Swedish pop sensation Tove Styrke, U.S. superstar B.o.B. and the incredible Nelly Furtado.
One of the most magical moments of the night was Swedish siren Loreen’s performance of “Euphoria,” the winning song of the 2012 Eurovision song contest – the euphoric crowd singing along to the number one song in Europe, when confetti cannons went off into the midsummer evening sky.
