Last Tuesday night saw 50,000 music fans set Florianna on fire at the Isle of MTV Malta Special on the sun-kissed Mediterranean island. As the sun set over the stunning Il Fosos Square, international superstars Nelly Furtado, Flo Rida, will.i.am and Eva Simons made sure the crowds danced the night away.
As local DJs pumped up the crowd, VIMN teams who had gathered from all over Europe put the finishing touches to the 250m square stage, making sure the 50 light cubes were ready to dance to the beat of the music and the sound systems were ready for the massive summer anthems about to hit the fans. Backstage, press interviews were wrapping up, costumes made from the latest technology were being checked one last time, all while Exec Producer Jane Fraser looked on calmly, as the culmination of the past few months of hard work and international collaboration was about to come to fruition in the most spectacular style.
Eva Simons and her trademark mohawk opened the show, pumping up the crowd with her unique blend of electro dance-pop showing exactly why she is one of the hottest current new acts.
Nelly Furtado then took to the stage with a full live band, performing an eclectic, dynamic set which included a monster dubstep remix of Turn Off The Lights with fellow Canadian Saukrates, and her new track, Big Hoops – which featured an appearance from the hoop-spinning Native American from the Big Hoops music video.
Hot on the heels of Nelly Furtado was heavyweight rapper Flo Rida, who got the crowd spinning straight away with Right Round. His high octane performance went to another level when, complete with bling-encrusted microphone, he literally took off from the stage into the crowds. Carried by what must have been a very hefty security man, Flo Rida worked the fans right in the middle of the square with back-to-back hits that included Good Feeling, Whistle and Club Can’t Handle Me, most definitely throwing some ‘whistles’ to the fans.
As local Maltese DJs got the crowd ready for will.i.am, pan-European sponsor Cornetto made sure the revellers were full of energy by handing out hundreds of delicious ice creams. By this point the energy in the square was incredible, and when will.i.am appeared on stage the crowd exploded into 50,000 crazed, dancing fans.
Surrounded by dancers wearing 3D iPad helmets with moving images of his face, will.i.am opened with smash hit T.H.E (Hardest Ever), showing none of the nerves he admitted having to MTV News the day before. Dancing girls wielded chainsaws and circus performers wowed the crowd as he was joined by Eva Simons for This is Love – a track will.i.am told MTV was the answer to Black Eyed Peas’ “Where Is The Love?”; he had found love in music. will.i.am then showed off his DJ skills, and BEP’s I Gotta Feeling brought the show to a climatic close.
This is the sixth year Isle of MTV has partnered with the Malta Tourism Authority to stage Isle of MTV. VIMN teams from all over Europe come together to stage the event, which draws more than 50,000 people each summer.
For those who couldn’t be there, you will be able to watch the show on MTV channels around the world from early August – check out the video above and slideshow for a sneak peek of what to expect.
