Stephen Colbert traded in his studio seat for sea legs—hosting StePhest Colbchella ‘012 Rocktaugustfest aboard the USS Intrepid on the Hudson River in New York. The footage from the festival aired this week. Like any major music festival, the event featured a wide lineup including Fun., Santigold, The Flaming Lips, and Grizzly Bear—with Grand Master Flash serving as DJ and Colbert as the comedic emcee.
But despite the change of venue and the musical focus, the evening was not without Colbert’s characteristically quick wits and satire. In various degrees of swashbuckling pirate dress throughout the festival, Colbert saluted corporate sponsors, played Battleship, and danced gleefully on the side while acts performed. As the festival progressed, so too did the novelty of the affair, culminating in Colbert and Wayne Coyne crowd surfing encased in transparent “space balls,” a trademark of Flaming Lips’ performances.
The combination of humor and live music proved to be the ideal blend of entertainment with attendees alternatively laughing and fist pumping throughout the event—a fitting way for the Colbert Nation to set sail.
