Getting the great British press to attend a programming launch in deepest darkest January is no mean feat. Like most of the country, they want nothing more than to be in front of a roaring fire, snug in a onesie and watching something good on the telly. So, to make the night a success, two essential pre-requisites are a kick-ass venue and really compelling content. Luckily, the recent MTV UK slate launch had both in spades.
The venue – a brand spanking new hotel in the centre of London was an absolute winner. The ME Hotel, designed by the legendary Lord Norman Foster’s group sits on the site from which the BBC first broadcast music, pretty appropriate for MTV! The reception is housed in an amazing 10-storey triangular atrium ending in a small skylight, which we utilised to its full capacity by projecting a light-show of branding up and down the entire space before shepherding all the guests up to the tenth floor bar for drinks, food and presentations. And of course the view. It may have been one of the coldest night’s London has had for some time but that didn’t stop guests venturing outside on to the roof terrace to drink in the spectacular London skyline – from Tower Bridge all the way to the Houses of Parliament, it was certainly a sight not to be missed.
Much like the MTV content of course. MTV VJ Laura Whitmore kicked off proceedings before inviting Kerry Taylor (SVP, GM MTV UK) up to the stage to showcase what’s on offer on the channel for 2013. With so many new programmes, events, music initiatives and of course riding the wave of success MTV UK enjoyed in 2012 the presentation and accompanying reels went down an absolute treat, helped of course by the very vocal Geordie Shore cast who were in attendance and loving the sneak preview of the series five promo amongst other things!
And, as an extra pull for press, we were also lucky to have Max and Nev, the geniuses behind ‘Catfish’ in the house. They entertained and delighted the press with a Q&A and tales of their experiences in making the show as well as personal do’s and don’ts for online dating…a particular highlight being Max’s reminder that if all the photos of your boyfriend/girlfriend are showing off their semi-naked body in a variety of extremely flattering and well shot poses, instead of badly lit, slightly drunk and surrounded by friends, it could be an indicator that something isn’t quite ringing true!
With Kerry finishing off the presentations by highlighting some of the amazing music content we have upcoming on the channel the night began to change gear and mellow as the audience was blown away by an acoustic set from Gabrielle Aplin, official next big thing and finalist in MTV UK’s Brand New for 2013 competition. From there, press and clients carried on enjoying food and drink soundtracked by Becca – MTV VJ and DJ, until it was time to head back out into the cold and dark January night having been warmed through by another brilliant MTV party.
