It may be the best CMT CROSSROADS collaboration yet. When Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter John Legend and Grammy Award-winning country powerhouse Lee Ann Womack met on the CROSSROADS stage, the result was unforgettable.
On Sept. 17 at The Factory in Franklin, Tenn., a full crowd lined up an hour-and-a-half before the show to witness the two great performers come together for the first time. Lee Ann sparkled in a shimmery blue jumpsuit like the true country superstar she is; a great contrast to a leather clad Legend whose cool demeanor was contagious. Legend exclaimed that he was happy to be back in Nashville; die-hard fans knew he was in town after he tweeted a photo of CMT’s notorious West End billboard featuring the upcoming show.
The duo performed a few of each other’s songs, including hits like Legend’s “All of Me” and Womack’s “The Way I’m Livin’” from her new album, released yesterday. Legend showed off his captivating piano skills, accompanying the band on a few of the songs. The set list also included “Ashes By Now,” “I May Hate Myself in the Morning,” “Save Room” and “You and I”.
The atmosphere was fun and energetic; at one point in the show, Womack even joked with Legend that he should make a country record, to which he replied, “Let’s do it!” They had the crowd cheering from beginning to end and seemed to really be enjoying themselves onstage.
Both stars joked between songs and shared admiration for each other as performers. When Legend missed a word in one of Womack’s songs, she exclaimed that it was “finally” the first hiccup Legend had made after two days of rehearsal.
The pair transitioned into Womack’s iconic “I Hope You Dance,” which she sang at Maya Angelou’s funeral in June. Legend praised the song, saying, “It has touched many people all over the world.” The evening concluded with an enthusiastic encore of Legend’s upbeat track “Green Light.”
CMT CROSSROADS: JOHN LEGEND AND LEE ANN WOMACK premieres Friday, Sept. 26 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CMT.
