When you take a legendary rock icon and a country superstar who’s at the height of his career, add in a stage, lights and two of the best bands around, musical magic is made. Last month at The Factory in Franklin, Tenn., Bob Seger and Jason Aldean united for the first time on the CMT CROSSROADS stage for an end-of-the-year event that neither could turn down.
After CMT host Cody Alan welcomed a standing-room-only crowd, Bill Flanagan, CMT CROSSROADS EP and EVP/Editorial Director of Viacom Media Networks, introduced Seger and Aldean.
“We started Crossroads in 2001,” remarked Flanagan. “And every month, from 2001 to about a month ago, we have called on Bob Seger and asked if he was ready to do CROSSROADS. Last month, he answered that he was finally ready.”
Aldean is no stranger to the CMT Crossroads stage – he performed with Bryan Adams back in 2009. On this night, he took the stage clad in his signature button-down short-sleeved shirt and cowboy hat, ready to rock it out with Seger, whom he considers one of his musical heroes. The duo kicked off the evening with Aldean hits including “Night Train,” “Tattoos on This Town” and “She’s Country.” Aldean also introduced “Just Getting Started,” a new single from his latest album, Old Boots, New Dirt, released last month.
When Seger’s band took the stage, the crowd sang along to hits like “Her Strut” and “Against the Wind.” From Seger’s just-released new album, Ride Out, they slowed down for “Fireman’s Talkin,” which Seger explained he wrote for his sister’s husband, who is a firefighter. When it came time for “Turn the Page” Aldean expressed the sentimentality of the moment, as he considers this Seger song to be one of the theme songs of his life.
“This song is one of my favorite all-time songs, by any artist. I would play it at shows when I was 14 or 15, but it wasn’t until now, about 20 years later, that I truly understand its meaning. Back then I just thought it was a cool song – I hadn’t experienced anything yet, not even middle school!”
Throughout the evening Aldean showed off impressive guitar skills, while Seger circulated around the stage with dance moves anyone would be jealous of. It was clear to the crowd that the two artists were in awe of each other and didn’t want the show to end. The pair finished off the show with a strong rendition of Seger’s “Hollywood Nights” before thanking the crowd for sharing the unique experience. It is safe to say that the performance was nothing short of an ‘old time rock and roll’ masterpiece.
CMT CROSSROADS: BOB SEGER AND JASON ALDEAN premieres Black Friday, November 28 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on CMT.
