In the U.S., 41% of transgendered people will attempt suicide due to their experiences of discrimination, violence and non-acceptance, which is a startling nine times the national average, according to the National Center for Transgender Equality. In a collaboration that is equal parts innovative and socially impactful, MTV and LOGO help audiences unlearn biases and open dialogue with family and friends for a more inclusive world – and an end to this horrifying statistic. This collaboration is the hour-long documentary, Laverne Cox Presents…The T Word.

Narrated and executive produced by actress Laverne Cox, The T Word (which you can watch online here), introduces us to a group of courageous, self-aware young adults who share common obstacles and goals as transgender youth in America. The documentary sparked buzz and, more importantly, meaningful conversation, around issues in the transgender community, ranging from bullying and coming out to the challenges of overcoming de-humanizing language.

“Laverne Cox has been a pioneer in bringing transgender issues and stories into the national spotlight, and we are proud to work with her on this new documentary,” said Stephen Friedman, President of MTV. “Every young person struggles to define their identity, but for transgender people that struggle is magnified. The T Word shows how challenging it can be – and how inspiring it is when people discover themselves and truly live their authentic lives.”

The documentary aligns with LOGO’s core identity as one of the original catalysts for fueling gay and lesbian integration into mainstream culture, as well as MTV’s commitment to fighting racial, gender and anti-LGBT bias, particularly through its “Look Different” campaign. To support of The T Word and its mission, the Look Different campaign will engage with the transgender community and empower the audience at large to better understand the bias transgender youth experience on a daily basis while providing tips on how to support transgender equality. More broadly, Viacom takes pride in marrying one-of-a-kind programming with social impact. The premiere of Laverne Cox presents: The T Word is one such recent pride-point.
