As you read this, calm and tranquillity has been restored to Malta’s beautiful Il-Fosos Square. It’s hard to believe that just last week it played host to MTV’s biggest Summer live music extravaganza, Isle of MTV Malta (IOMTV), which returned to the island for the ninth consecutive year.
The free outdoor concert – delivered in partnership with the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and sponsored by MuseAmi’s ever-popular ‘singing selfie’ social media app Hook’d – attracted more than 50,000 party goers, who enjoyed throw-down performances from some of the biggest and most talked about names in today’s global music scene.
MTV veejay and international star Laura Whitmore hosted the show, introducing the performers who would all be making their hotly anticipated IOMTV debut. Joining the best of the best who have all performed at the event before (including Enrique Iglesias, Nicole Scherzinger, Snoop, Will.I.Am, Rita Ora, Jessie J, David Guetta, Lady Gaga, and many more) – the class of 2015 included R&B superstar Jason Derulo, sibling indie-pop band Echosmith, L.A. starlet Tori Kelly, 2015 breakthrough star OMI, and one of the biggest EDM deejays and producers in the world: Martin Garrix.
As the hot Malta sun streamed across the square, Kelly was first up to captivate the crowd with her irresistible, soulful melodies. Exciting newcomers Echosmith followed, showing everyone why they were the Cool Kids of IOMTV 2015, bringing their distinctive summer sound that combines entrancing vocal harmonies and catchy guitar hooks, closing their set on a high with the release of 200 giant, multi-colored balloons into the crowd.
Breakthrough star OMI performed his platinum-selling summer smash anthem Cheerleader, (which had the crowd going wild as soon as the opening bars played out), followed by global pop superstar and ultimate showman Derulo, who turned up the heat with his unique blend of RNB beats, cool style and killer rhythm, delivering a masterful performance of top dance tracks, including Want to Want Me, the current international smash dominating the number one chart position around the world.
The Dutch superstar brought the festival to a close, following in the footsteps of his peers Hardwell (2014) and Afrojack (2013). With the crowd pounding the stone granaries to smash hits, including Animals and Don’t Look Down, the stage exploded with pyrotechnics, streamers, lasers and confetti.
As Malta recovers from its ninth consecutive annual hangover – and MTV execs make their way with heavy heads back to London HQ – there’s no time to rest. It’s eyes down for the 10th anniversary show next year, confirmed to take place on the June 28, 2016 – let the countdown commence.
