Since 2010, CMT has been bringing the big time to McGavock High School in its Nashville hometown. Community leaders have stopped by. The net has formed the CMT Academy, part of a city-wide school improvement effort praised by President Obama. Students have learned broadcasting and production skills directly from the pros-turned-mentors who deliver CMT’s hit shows.
Now add this: a visit from second lady of the United States Dr. Jill Biden, who toured the academy and other McGavock High School programs in late January. A relentless advocate of free community college, Dr. Biden praised the academy and its Nashville peers as a highly effective way to prepare students for education after high school.
Amid the backdrop of a highly partisan national election, Dr. Biden’s visit was remarkable for its bipartisan spirit: Republican Governor Bill Haslam joined the tour. The two have long shared an interest in opening up free access to community or technical college, Dr. Biden as chair of the College Promise Campaign, the governor through his Tennessee Promise initiative.
