The MTV Woodies Honor Artists at SXSW

The MTV Woodies at SXSW is where music, fashion and culture collide. This year’s host was hip hop artist A$AP Rocky. “I’m taking you backstage to see how it really goes down,” said Rocky. “How performers with different styles are able to come together, collaborate and inspire each other.”

The crowd cheered as A$AP Ferg kicked the ceremony off with a performance of “New Level.” Then, A$AP Rocky took the audience backstage to talk to BØRNS. They discussed getting online support and shout outs from other artists, like Taylor Swift.

After their performance, A$AP Rocky introduced one of his favorite actors, Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, to the stage. “When I heard this guy was gonna be here, I knew it was gonna be lit,” said Rocky.

Paul introduced his “beautiful, bearded friend,” musician Jack Garratt, who performed his melodic song, “Worry.”

Later on in the show, Rocky brought the audience backstage again to chill with his “A$AP Mob”. He introduced artist Jidenna, who recapped some of the festival’s earlier hits.

Next, A$AP Ferg made another appearance to introduce Kehlani. “Her beautiful vocals make her songs timeless, which is why she’s one of the biggest new faces here today,” said Ferg. Kehlani performed her funky R&B hit, “The Way”.

“Want to know why I love the Woodies,” asked A$AP Rocky in another backstage interlude. “Cause with all the music here, it’s impossible to go wrong. And each artist that hits our stage has his own style.”

He then introduced Chvrches, a group he promised the audience would add to their playlists. Chvrches performed their synthpop hit, “Clearest Blue.”

Later in the show, hip hop artist Pusha T introduced the Chainsmokers, a duo he says transcended EDM and crossed over into the mainstream. “They broke the internet with ‘Selfie’, they broke it some more with the song they’re doing tonight,” said Pusha T.

That song was their hit, “Roses”. The crowd went wild for the final performance of the Woodies.

A$AP Rocky closed the show by thanking his A$AP Mob, and the rest of the night’s talented performers. “You made this a blast for us, let’s go!”
