Star Trek Beyond’s Krall Is the Thinking Man’s Villain

When Star Trek Beyond hits theaters tomorrow, the Enterprise will be loaded up with the familiar crew that has piloted the starship since the series’ 2009 reboot: Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock, the late Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov, and more.

But not all will be familiar. In his inaugural turn at the helm of a Star Wars movie, director Justin Lin has brought some intriguing new characters crashing to terra firma alongside the stranded Starfleet crew, including Jaylah, a zebra-striped warrior, and Krall, an arch villain who brings a reign of unrelenting chaos along with him.

In the featurette above, Idris Elba – who plays Krall – steps past the pure-evil personification to analyze what some interpret as the character’s legitimate reasons to resent the alliance. Lin and Pine also add a bit of context. To see how bad the new bad guy really is, you’ll have to line up at the theater.
