It’s 1942. War has enveloped the planet. Chaos is everywhere.
Out of this maelstrom, a love story: intelligence officer Max Vatan (Brad Pitt) encounters the remarkable Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard) when they jointly dismember a Nazi gala and escape into the North African deserts. They kiss on the roofs of Casablanca and make love in their car as a sandstorm wails outside. From there, on to London, where the Blitz is terrorizing the city nightly. Still, they settle into some form of domestic life, complete with a child and a flat of their own. All is as calm as it can be.
Until Vatan is met with a revelation from British officials: “We suspect your wife is a German spy.”
