Orange blimps invaded Los Angeles, along with a deluge of slime, stars, and surprises, for the 28th annual Kids’ Choice Awards earlier this month.
Nickelodeon’s 2017 Kids’ Choice Awards juxtaposed beloved mainstays (green goo, orange blimps, and celebrity guests) with cutting-edge elements. Stars shot out of an orange slide to get onstage. A drone circled the audience at the University of Southern California’s Galen Center, affixed to an orange blimp, snapping shots of fans and posting them to a second screen in the arena. A “live set” of real kids posing as stage props capped off the ultimate fans-first experience.
WWE star John Cena hosted the extravaganza, getting the chance to flex his muscles in an arm wrestling contest with the cast of Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn. This was one of many stunts chosen by the kids watching at home on Nick’s multiplatform, digital voting system.
“I think [the show is] special because it’s kids, what they like, and at the end of the day, that’s really all that matters, because that’s the future and that’s pure,” Kuu Kuu Harajuki producer Gwen Stefani, who presented at this year’s ceremony, told the Hollywood Reporter. With stars like Stefani, Demi Lovato, DJ Khaled, Heidi Klum, Miranda Cosgrove, the cast of Nickelodeon’s School of Rock, Zoe Saldana and more in attendance, the KCAs were a veritable who’s who of Hollywood.
Here are some highlights from the year’s slimiest celebration:
2017’s ceremony included nine trendy titles never seen before at the KCAs. Voters picked their Favorite DJ/EDM Artist (Calvin Harris), Favorite Frenemies (Ginnifer Goodwin & Jason Bateman), Most Wanted Pet (Kevin Hart, aka Snowball from The Secret Life of Pets), and Favorite Viral Music Artist (JoJo Siwa) among other funky favorites. Old-school titles such as Favorite TV Show (Henry Danger) were also duly represented.
JoJo Siwa was delighted to win Favorite Viral Music Artist.
An inspirational oath
Finding Dory star Ellen DeGeneres won three accolades at this year’s show—Favorite Voice From an Animated Movie, Favorite Animated Movie and #Squad. What does it take to be in this comedian’s squad? According to DeGeneres, it’s self-love, kindness, and practicing good dental hygiene. After accepting her award, she asked the audience to repeat after her.
“I am good enough just as I am,” said DeGeneres. “I am supposed to be unique and different. I’m not supposed to be like everyone else. I promise to be kind to people. I promise to brush my teeth every day and floss.”
A fresh look.
Nick took advantage of its marquee event to debut a new look for the entire network. From marketing material to the stunning stage, the KCAs reflected Nickelodeon’s bright, whimsical rebrand.
Nickelodeon’s artwork is indisputably 2017—after all, it was inspired by GIFs, emoticons, and memes. These quirky graphics feature both regular kids and network talent against a pastel color palette of purple, blue, and cream.
Like all things KCA, the shift was inspired by Nickelodeon’s audience, according to Nickelodeon Group Senior Vice President and Creative Director Michael Waldron. “The refresh,” said Waldron in a press release, “Looks through the lens of how kids see things—the unpredictable, extraordinary and joyful nature of a child’s imagination.”

Veteran stars are used to at least one thing about the KCAs—going there glam, and coming back green. Singer Demi Lovato was the first of the night to get slimed, doused with an unprecedented amount of green goo from cannons firing in every direction.

Other slimy stars? Kevin Hart joined the slime club for the first time after accepting his award, and truly appreciated every sticky moment. “I have waited my whole life to get slimed,” he told the audience afterwards.

The night ended with a messy finale, as Cena was ceremoniously soaked in Nickelodeon’s finest green grime.
