As MTV’s popular series Teen Wolf edges towards its conclusion (at least in its current iteration – the show is already slated for a reboot) – with the second half of the sixth and last season debuting this Sunday, July 30 – it is an ideal time to reflect on the show’s impact.
After a sometimes-terrifying, sometimes captivating, always-fun six-year run, fans are accepting that this particular set of beloved Teen Wolf characters will only be around for 10 more episodes, and a bittersweet nostalgia has descended. Tyler Posey, who plays protagonist/werewolf Scott McCall, shared his reaction to news of the show’s end in an interview with TV Line: “So much peace was in me, and happiness, looking back on everything that we’ve done as a cast, as a show, as an entity. There’s not a lot of shows that can say they’ve done that and made 100 episodes and remained friends and are going to go on to bigger and better things… I am going to bawl my eyes out, but they’re all happy tears.”
The cast seems uniformly both grateful to have been part of the show and dejected about its ending:
From the series’ beginning, Scott, a high school teenager who is bitten by a werewolf and subsequently becomes one, experiences an endless sequence of emotional and suspenseful moments. Alongside his best friend Stiles Stilinski (Dylan O’Brien), Scott quickly discovers that the other students at Beacon Hills High School carry supernatural secrets of their own, and he spends the next six seasons collaborating with and battling these fellows in monsterhood.
As we prep for the final half season of howling mayhem, here’s a look back at some of the show’s most suspenseful and emotional moments [SPOILER ALERT: for those who have not seen the first five and a half seasons, the list below will give away some major plot developments]:
1. Stiles Prevents Scott from Committing Suicide
Throughout the series, Stilinksi, son of the local sheriff, and Scott share a deep friendship – and this is never more evident than the poignant moment in season three’s Motel California episode, when the former stops his wolf-bit bud from committing suicide. Believing he endangers everyone he encounters, Scott surrounds himself with gasoline and prepares to drop a flare. But Stiles steps in and grabs it, saying, “You’re someone. You’re… Scott. You’re my best friend. Okay? And I need you.”
2. Stiles Saves Derek’s Life (You may notice a theme here)
Scott’s classmate Derek Hale (Tyler Hoechlin) is also familiar with the transformative power of a full moon – he was born into a family of werewolves and mentors Scott and his friends. Derek and Stiles have a particularly antagonistic relationship, as neither one fully trusts the other. However, as the series goes on, the two begin to understand that they need to work together to keep Beacon Hills safe. Ongoing snarky comments aside, the two form a unique friendship that is endearing enough that fans have dubbed them “Sterek.” The unlikely duo’s friendship is perhaps best portrayed during a bizarre pool scene in season two’s Abomination, when Stiles holds a paralyzed Derek afloat as they flee from a strange creature that is unable to touch the water, prompting witty banter between them.
3. Stiles Shares an Emotional Moment with his Father
As one of the only human characters in the show, Stiles puts up with a lot of supernatural drama, with a loyalty and sense of humor that have endeared him to fans. But his very human relationship with his dad may be his most admirable. A particularly endearing moment occurs when Stiles returns home bearing a large welt on his face from fighting a werewolf hunter. Unable to tell the truth, Stiles says that members of the lacrosse team beat him up. His father becomes outraged that anyone would hurt his son, and, once he calms down, the two share a long embrace.
4. Allison’s Death
It doesn’t take long to become attached to the character of Allison Argent (Crystal Reed). She struggles to remain loyal to her family of werewolf hunters and to Scott, whom she enters into a secret relationship with. Despite their eventual break-up, she remains a strong, loyal friend. During the season three episode Insatiable, Allison is fatally stabbed in a battle with a demon warrior. In her last moments, she tells Scott that she still loves him. Buzzfeed’s Louis Peitzman paid tribute to Allison’s lasting impact, stating that she successfully “changed the role of women in supernatural romance.”
5. Stiles and Lydia Become a Couple
Nothing says drama and heartbreak quite like an unrequited love, and “Stydia” – as fans have tagged Stiles and fellow Beacon Hills student and banshee Lydia Martin (Holland Roden) – delivers this in agonizingly prolonged fashion. Lydia views Stiles only as a friend for the first few seasons, despite his evident romantic interest in her.
During the most recent season, Lydia finally confessed her love for Stiles, and the two shared a long-awaited kiss. The wait was definitely worth it.
6. Season 6A Final Scene
Who doesn’t love a good season (or half season, in this case) finale? Teen Wolf has delivered many season-ending cliffhangers. The season 6A finale, Riders on the Storm, maintains that tradition. Just when it seems as though everything in Beacon Hills is calming down and everyone is headed off to college, Scott and Stiles hear on the radio that a dead body has been found in the woods, echoing the opening moments of the very first episode. In true hero fashion, the duo sets off into the woods to investigate.
As anticipation builds for the final episodes, audiences are showing a mix of mourning and appreciation:
