With delightful decadence, audience engagement, and celeb camaraderie, the 24th annual EMA Awards, from London’s Wembley Arena, were a spectacle not to be missed. For those who didn’t catch the show, here are some highlights:
EMA Host Rita Ora was full of surprises
Between her singing and acting ventures, fashion collaborations with Adidas and Calvin Klein, TV coaching appearances on The X Factor and The Voice UK, as well as a hosting gig for VH1’s revamped season of America’s Next Top Model last year, Rita Ora is a renaissance woman—and a busy one at that. This was clear as she stepped out on the red carpet in a bathrobe and towel. Well, a diamond necklace, too.
But the multi-talented host rolled through 12 costume changes that night, from hotel-party-chic to 90s exercise gear to a slew of technicolor wigs and, inexplicably, a floor-length necklace in the shape of a garden fork. Her hosting duties included a pair of performances—her No. 1 hit, Your Song, followed by crowd-favorite Anywhere.

Eminem walks on water, cementing a comeback that began at BET’s Hip Hop Awards
Eminem performed his new single Walk On Water at the EMAs, confirming rumors that his epic comeback would occur at the world’s biggest concert. The song features vocals by Beyoncé, moody synth riffs and stripped-down percussion. The performance began with some karaoke at an “English pub” constructed off-stage, then moved to the main stage for a crescendo of strings and guest vocals by singer Skylar Grey (who co-wrote the track and stepped up to perform in Beyoncé’s place).
It was the rap star’s first live performance of Walk On Water, a song which meditates on “trying and failing to meet up to expectations,” according to Variety.

Shawn Mendes surprises with three wins
There’s nothing holding Shawn Mendes back…except maybe the weight of his three EMAs. Mendes won best song for his hit single, There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back. The Canadian singer-songwriter also won accolades for best artist and biggest fans.

Mendes is just 19 years old, and his EMA triple-win is sure to bolster his A-list status and star power. But the singer remained humble as he accepted his award for best artist, thanking fellow nominees Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus.
“They’re people I’ve looked up to my entire life,” said Mendes, “and to be nominated with them is a crazy honor.”
Our hearts are still in Havana, thanks to Camila Cabello’s scintillating performance
Cabello gave us another dose of the infectious melody during her EMA performance, where she swayed across the stage in a scarlet, ruffled bodysuit and danced upon a projected swimming pool alongside a crew of synchronized “swimmers” in pink garb.

Havana won the EMA for best pop song, and Cabello graciously thanked her fans via Instagram:
