Channel 5 Cruises to First BAFTA Award With Jane McDonald Travel Doc

Channel 5’s Cruising With Jane McDonald is a British docu-series that features former cruise ship singer Jane McDonald as she tours lux ships around the world. Earlier this month, at the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Awards, the travel documentary snagged Channel 5’s first-ever BAFTA Award for Best Feature.

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) acquired Channel 5 in 2014. Since then, the flagship UK network has experienced soaring ratings behind both new and established content. Channel 5 capped off 2017 with a 5 percent increase in audience growth, the largest of any public service broadcaster in the UK.

McDonald thanked Channel 5 for its “vision and support” in her BAFTA acceptance speech, and said the award was a testament to the network’s evolution.

In a note to Viacom’s UK staff, James Currell, executive vice president and managing director for UK, Northern & Eastern Europe, expressed gratitude and appreciation to all involved in the achievement of Channel 5’s “momentous win,” as well as Viacom’s other award-winning properties.

“This is a huge accolade to the fantastic work by all at Channel 5,” wrote Currell. “Cruising with Jane McDonald is a hit show produced by our very own in-house production arm Elephant House Studios (EHS). The distinctive gold mask was collected by Jane [McDonald] herself, and it was great to hear [McDonald] highly commend Channel 5 and EHS during the live show.

“This award attests to the incredible creative evolution and reputation shift that Channel 5 has undergone in the last few years. Congratulations to [Channel 5 Director of Programming] Ben Frow and team on this truly historic win.”
