VH1 Senior Social Media Coordinator Chuck Johnson Lives His New York City Dream at Viacom

Chuck Johnson interned on the VH1 Consumer Marketing team in the fall semester of 2013, and the VH1 Public Relations team in the spring semester of 2014. Currently, he works as a senior social media coordinator at VH1.

Campus to Career: Thanks for speaking with us about your experience as an intern and full-time employee, Chuck. Can you tell us a bit about your background and education?

CJ: I attended North Carolina A&T State University for my bachelor’s degree, and then went to New York University (NYU) for graduate school. I interned at Viacom while studying at NYU, and immediately knew this was exactly the place for me to start my career.

Awesome! What drew you to Viacom?

Growing up, I had always felt so connected to all of Viacom’s brands. Each has impacted me at a different stage of life, and I was so ready to work for a company with that kind of reach.

For me, the entertainment industry – Viacom specifically – embodied the New York City dream. I couldn’t wait to get my foot in the door.

You definitely did all that, and more. Can you share some advice for students who want to continue into full-time positions?

Absorb as much as you can. Talk to people in your department, brand and also in adjacent functions. Go beyond their day-to-day and learn what their career stories are and how they advanced in the industry.

Also, make time to enjoy yourself. You have your whole life to work, but only a few valuable years to intern (if you’re lucky). Take advantage of all the perks and opportunities because they truly are special. Your team knows this is a learning experience for you and wants to help your growth.

Excellent advice, thank you for sharing. How did your supervisors and teammates contribute to your professional development?

My supervisors at both Viacom internships gave me a lot of responsibility and had an “open-door” policy in terms of answering questions.

I was able to work on and manage my own tasks, attend events and even interview talent and draft media pitches.

By giving me immersive projects and always being there to answer questions, my team helped me develop a ton of skills which helped me so much in my first full time role.

That is fantastic – how did you end up starting full-time at VH1?

One of my internship supervisors informed me of a project-based opportunity within the VH1 Social Media department. I applied to the role and got the offer. Later on, the role was converted to full-time staff and I’ve continued to grow in it since.

Thanks so much for sharing, Chuck. It was a pleasure hearing your story. To close, can you please tell us your favorite Viacom brand or show?

My favorite brand is Nickelodeon, and my favorite show is Nick’s Legends of the Hidden Temple.

This story is part of our series on intern success stories featuring interns who have gone on to full time opportunities at Viacom and Paramount. Stay tuned for more every Tuesday this summer, and follow us on @ViacomInterns to watch the interviews.
