Hailed a “creative virtuoso” who is highly proactive and a true  life saver for his department, Gavin Alaoen, Senior Interactive Designer for the Music Group’s Connected Content team, is Best In Show this month.

“A strong team player and collaborator, Gavin goes above and beyond the call of duty,” says Anna Lee, a design producer on Gavin’s team. “With every digital design opportunity, from the Woodies to Movies and VMA’s site branding, he doesn’t just deliver the minimum required, he approaches it with a 360 perspective and seeks to optimize both the visual communication and experience – even if that means for him working the late shift.”

Asked how he overcomes challenges in life or work, Gavin said he does so “by not being afraid to fail.” His team echoes those sentiments, praising him for his fearlessness when it comes to sharing ideas, pushing limits, taking risks, as well as voice his growing expertise in the social sphere. here’s what else our own “creative virtuoso” had to say:

Tell me a little bit about yourself and your role at Viacom.

Originally from California and been in New York for about 5 years now. My role at Viacom consists of design for the digital side of MTV (tent pole events, shows, editorial content, etc)

What’s a typical day like for you?

Meetings forever in the mornings. Answering emails, and then finally sitting down and getting all tasks accomplished that are needed that day. Lunch is somewhere in there as well!

What’s the best part of your job?

Working with like-minded creatives who share common interests (and the free soda in the kitchen area).

How do you overcome challenges in the workplace or elsewhere in your life?

By not being afraid to fail.

In your opinion, what are the ingredients for success, either in the design world or at Viacom more broadly?

Being outside of your comfort zone and trying new things not helps growth personally but as well as your career.

What project are you most proud of having completed at work in the past year?

Most recently the All Access Live experience for the MTV Movie Awards 2014. Also this GIF:

Where can we find you on the weekends?

Probably asleep!
