Viacommunity Takes Talent for Good West

Last month, Viacommunity journeyed to Viacom’s Hollywood office, the Paramount Lot and the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank as part of an official West Coast launch of Talent for Good, Viacom’s skills-based volunteer program in conjunction with Catchafire.

The program kicked off with an exclusive Rapid Fire event in Hollywood. We matched five teams of Viacom and Paramount volunteers with one of five local nonprofit organizations to take part in a two-hour brainstorm, exploring solutions to each nonprofit’s challenges. All five teams then shared their solutions, forging connections with their colleagues and local nonprofits. Each organization left with clear next steps and tools to overcome their challenges and move closer to achieving their missions.

Viacom volunteers and their community partners met to explore solutions to the organization’s concerns at Viacom’s new Hollywood facility in October 2017.

The participating organizations and their respective challenges were as follows:

Lambda Legal is the oldest and largest legal organization advocating through impact litigation and public policy work for the LGBTQ community and people living with HIV. The organization’s premier L.A.-based annual event, the West Coast Liberty Awards, attracts more than 400 supporters to honor advocates, activists and companies whose work complements Lambda Legal’s mission. Lambda Legal seeks to elevate their visibility as a Hollywood “influencer” so they can appeal to a new, younger audience.

My Friend’s Place assists and inspires homeless youth to build self-sufficient lives in Los Angeles. In 2018, the organization will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a spring gala and special campaign, complemented by storytelling that communicates and celebrates their heritage. The group needs creative thinkers to brainstorm inventive ways of sharing that history through unique storytelling that will drive engagement with their anniversary celebration.

by Stuart Winchester, Viacom

Viacom’s new West Coast headquarters opened last night in a raucous cascade of music and optimism, uniting the creative forces of eight major brands in a soaring, aspirational space at the heart of Hollywood.

“This new Hollywood facility reinforces our presence in the world’s entertainment capital, connecting us more deeply with the creative community and bringing inspiration for our employees, who help us deliver world-class entertainment and unforgettable stories to our audiences every day,” said Viacom President and CEO Bob Bakish. “We wanted to create a space that encourages collaboration, creativity and innovation, and gives creators and employees the tools they need to do their best work.”

Bakish shared a huge stage at the launch party, addressing hundreds of employees between performances by Flo Rida and Snoop Dogg (posing as DJ Snoopadelic), star of VH1’s hit Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party and executive producer of MTV’s Mary + Jane. Deadline, Hollywood Reporter and Variety all posted vivid dispatches of the wild outdoor scene.

Vin Diesel Tries to Look Dope While Kicking Ass on Facebook Live Release of New xXx Trailer

by Stuart Winchester, Viacom

Vin Diesel is exploding back into his role as Xander Cage this January in xXx: Return of Xander Cage. He is skiing into jungles off of cell phone towers and launching fools out the back of airplanes. He’s skateboarding off the sides of buses. He is riding his motorcycle over water. Oh, and he’s also saving the world.

As if the new trailer weren’t cool enough, the way Vin dropped it on the world was even cooler: through a Facebook Live stream that featured cameos from costars Ruby Rose, Nina Dobrev, Donnie Yen, and others.

Standing on the Paramount Lot in Hollywood, Diesel explained why he decided to deliver the latest promo on Facebook. “Part of the reason I was excited to be doing this with Facebook, is that none other than [Facebook founder] Mark Zuckerberg actually requested me to make another Triple X.”

Vin’s affection for his castmates and the process of making the movie is infectious. “I needed to do a movie where I could smile again,” he says on the stream. “I needed a movie where I enjoyed the laughter, where the laughter would fill me, where the laughter was bursting out. I needed to do a movie where I could get into some of these extreme sports stunts again. I had so much fun just training for these stunts. … When we started filming and I was with this incredible cast, and this atmosphere, and everyone was so excited, everyone was like, ‘Vin, I’ve never seen you so happy.’ I needed it, and you know it.”

It’s easy to see why he’s so excited when you check out the trailer. You can watch the entire Facebook Live stream, in which Vin himself sees the promo for the first time, here:
